Steering Column - Metal Needles found drivers floormat

Car is Talladega Red 90 SPG w/ 205K. With the cold weather here lately I've noticed that every so often my steering wheel sounds like it's crunching as I turn it, it sort of catches too... goes away as soon as the car is warmed up.
Yesterday I look at my floormat, and I see what looks like 2 little metal round cynlinders of metal on the floor, which if I know anything, look like pieces of a needle bearing that's come apart. Where on earth are these pieces of needle bearing/metal from? Each was about 1cm long, and looks like a shiny bit of pencil lead.
In November I replaced clockspring and all of the upper steering rubber bushings and bearing that these airbag cars have, so I'm pretty sure this isn't it.
I'd been thinking that I shoudl find a good junker and replace my lower steering column (the 410 dollar one that has bearings on both sides)... but now I'm puzzled since I thought it was just 2 u joints, one upper, one lower.
Ideas?
