The steering column is made up of several pieces.
You have the lower part with U-joints and then the steering shaft which holds the steering wheel, but the steering shaft is suspended in the steering crash cage by rubber bushings and needle bearings.
It is quite a bit on tinkering to replace the needle bearings but possible.
If the rubber bushing that holds the needle beaing is bad too, you need to replace it as well.
The easiest way would probably be to find a good used complete steering crash cage with shaft and bearing intact and replace it as a whole.
