I spent some time looking in to this problem today. In my cars case, 5th has "floating/gateless" engagement UNLESS I put some forward pressure/movement while shifting it. What I found upon removal of the shift lever was that the delrin/nylon guide at the base of the shifter has a chunk gone from the fence (drivers side) that the reverse lockout pin rests against. It is this barrier that keeps you from engaging reverse without lifting the shift collar(pin). The fence is still intact on the front end, hence my feeling of solid shifting with the forward pressure.
Not sure if it was a worn out codition of break. Not sure if JB Weld is a good idea, or if I should put in a new shift housing.
BTW, I see most of the commerically available short shifters do not have reverse lockout. Does this imply floating 5th engagement???
