You know, the manual says to remove the lower ball joints, but I've never - EVER - had that work. I have much better luck and spit out far few curses when I undo the top ball joints. There is SO much more clearance doing this.
Roger D has the best advice, though - pull them both. You can keep the steering member from flopping all over the place by retaining the steering member with one bolt through the outer hole in the lower A-arm.
Be sure - no matter what - you have some wire on hand to tie the steering member to something. Otherwise, you'll put all sorts of bad stress on the rubber brake hose...
