Bradley,
Well the coupling is supposed to convey the movement of the shift control rod to the shift shaft without any lost motion. The rubber part of the coupling can tear or partially separate from the steel part and then it fails to convey the motion completely. So get under the car and have someone shift it through the gears while you observe the coupling. Also, the coupling clamps to the shift control rod and is locked to the shift shaft with a small tapered pin and either of those could be loose (more so the clamp). The clamp allows for proper adjustment of the linkage so if it's loose (or if you have to replace the coupling) you'll need to employ the adjustment procedure before tightening the clamp. If you need to replace a broken coupling check with salvage yards for a good used one, new ones are about $60.00. Good luck
