find a shop that will give you the suction and pressure side pressures at 2000 rpm as well as the condenser and evaporator temperatures. That should give you an indication of operation.
Secondly, as a general rule it's a GOOD THING to replace the expansion valve and/or the filter leading up to it (if so equipped) and/or the receiver/dryer after 15 years or so.
Years ago the EPA wanted to have high pressure hoses on car AC replaced as a scheduled service item every four years as I remember reading about it, especially for R134-type refrigerants. As you can guess that led nowhere. Point is HP hoses leak, some more than others. About all you can do at this point is suck and recharge and check for leaks...old car, etc. etc.
