Paul: Over time corrosion can really make a mess inside what looks like a sound good positive cable from battery, inside the plastic outer jacket of the cable that is. You might see the corrosion just at the point where the wires head inside the insulation; also, it will be stiff and might crunch as you flex it.
It sounds most like that.
The cure is, a new positive cable.
Or it could be a cable end that's not making solid contact with the battery post though both are clean. If the cable clamp bolt is all corroded, it can seem tight when it's not and the taper hole in the cable clamp might be bigger than the post, not closing down. But usually you'd at least get interior light and dash lights when key was on - - that situation, starter fails to turn and all lights go out only when you ask for a big draw by turning key to start.
Tell us more as this unfolds.
Doesn't sound at all like alternator or voltage regulator.
