It took me 413 miles to get there, as I said. Hung on with my fingertips, pulled myself back up, then hauled my teetering '92 900 NA auto back onto terra firma with my belt as a tow strap.
This was after testing out how far I can drive on a full tank of gas.
I actually did it twice - - 410 miles the first time, 413 the next, mixed city-hiway driving with my lead-heavy foot and me-first attitude. Speed never over 67 tho.
Based on what I added till pump kick-off each time, a little over 19 gallons, the average is around 21 miles a gallon. As above: it was an NA '92 with auto tranny. Tires right full, over 35 pounds in all four. Just me and some sandwich wrappers, tools and a 12-pound chihuahua on board.
So now I know I can dare to drive to 400 miles before a fill-up. Add Gas light comes on solid around 360 miles so now I know I can get by with ignoring that for quite a while, between 2 and 3 gallons left from point where it COMES ON ALL THE TIME and won't shut off no matter how car is sitting, that is. Even more miles possible from when it first starts to be on a lot.
Actually the first time, I got scared at 362 miles cause it was a Sunday night and had 50 miles to go with few stations on the way, so I added 3.45 gallons then, all my ready cash, and drove it till it totally died, at 484.8 miles. Coasted down a hill the last 1/4 mile to my house.
That running to bitter end was probly a mistake cause it lost prime and I had to add 1.5 gals (6 measured quarts) and even jump the car cause I killed battery cranking to get it to start. Then drove it straight to gas station 1/2 mile away and filled, 17.84 gals plus 1.5 gals plus 3.45 gals=22.79 gals into 485.3 equals 21.3 mpg.
Next time it coughed and there was an Irving station right there at the end of the earth waiting, just at 413 miles. But it was GAS-BOYCOTT TUESDAY and I tried to stay true to the cause so instead of filling I bought an exact gallon, drove 21 exact miles more till it coughed again at 434 as I was pulling around the corner to my house that night. So in a.m. I added an exact gallon I had in a lawnmower-gas can and drove to work, added 19 gals at 439.6 figuring it still had 3/4 gallon in it. 20.75 gallons into 439.6 miles is like 21.2 mpg.
SO, book says capacity is 18 gallons, someone on here said 18.8. Does tank plus filler neck make total fuel capacity in the later 900s something like 19.3 to 19.75 gallons, or are my local gas stations cheating on what they say they are pumping? (Maybe they ALL are ?!?!)
