Yeah, that first time, I got home fine that Sunday night, then KEPT driving meaning to use gas ALL up, which I did at the end of the night two days later. Only later did I think about the fuel pump. Car went for about a mile after the first cough till it died and had to coast. During that time it was skipping some, off and on. Boy was that dumb of me because pump must have been running dry and picking up a little fuel to pump here and there. That's BAD because pump needs fuel to cool it and to lube it. Lucky for me this took only maybe two minutes.
And once I finally got enough fuel in it to prime and start, it ran fine. And it's been running fine since.
See, I was thinking, "electric fuel pump, will prime itself easy." But I was blanking on what I know well: Saab fuel pumps only run while engine is running or cranking. And they barely crawl over while engine is cranking cause starter current draw is so high there's nothing left over for the fuel pump.
AND I kept just adding a quart of gas at a time to keep my little experiment simple. But of course even if the fuel pickup is at a great spot to draw down to a very low level, once the pump isn't primed any more it needs more gas in there to get sucking again.
I kept splashing a little fuel into the intake thru one of the vacuum bushing holes, that gave a little roar, but battery is a cheapo, no reserve power. (Just got the car, had bad alternator brushes, died so many times then it ruined battery.) So in the end I needed to jump it to spin long enough to suck up gas.
So kids don't try this at home.
And if you are gonna run out of gas shut it off at the first cough so when you do add gas it will start and run easy. Be kind to your fuel pump.
