Speaking of which, did that VW of yours have the little reserve lever you turned when you ran out of gas, that opened a tap to a lower part of the tank and gave you another gallon or so? That was before they added a gas gauge.
And a '56 I saw had a fuel cap so big you could reach your hand in with a measuring cup and dip gas out of the tank, or look in and judge what you had left.
And we had a '59 VW bus pickup truck that came with a tubular crank and a big forked nut bolting the crank pulley on the engine, so you could hand-start it if the battery was low.
Talk about faith, the Saab trolls were looking out for me and my ride I guess, letting us just slide wide a lane and into the pumps when the gas hit bottom once, and two other times letting me get it to my house.
If there are any troll-doubters out there, let them ponder that and they'll sober up and get the faith fast enough, you bet.
