Or should I make that "Dear Cultivate:" ? ? ?
There should be ONE square-shouldered O-ring that fits into a square groove in the face of the filter and is pressed against the flat face of the oil filter bracket as you tighten. I don't really see how it could go anywhere, it's held by the filter and they just don't break.
But IF the OLD filter's gasket stuck to the bracket and was still there when you or whoever screwed the new filter on, then it's trouble, and could be what your problem is. All the tightening in the world won't make it a safe situation - - the older gasket will sit there not supported by the groove in the filter, and can squeeze out egg-shaped anywhere on the side, letting all your precious motor's life's blood gush out under pressure.
We can't have that, now, can we?
So investigate by spinning the filter off and seeing what you see. That is, count ONE gasket and if there's another there as well, that was your problem.
This happened to me once and I've never trusted any shop to do an oil change since.
