Thanks again, everybody. This board is a lifesaver for crazies that want to keep their beloved 22 year- old cars on the road.
As I mentioned in my original post, I had recently replaced the oil pressure sender (the old one had clearly leaked from the plastic body). Turns out that while the loose oil filter was for real, the main leak was from the threaded base of the new pressure sender. There's a special socket (with enough clearance for the electric terminal) for sender devices which of course I didn't have, so I guess I hadn't sufficiently torqued it in.
But which my local in indy mechanic (who rarely sees any SAABs here in the Frozen Prairie) did have. He spun off the replacement sender (which hadn't leaked for the first month), wrapped teflon thread tape on the base, hardened it back in and voila, following the oil change+new filter, no more leakage.
Also he charged only $3 more altogether, than the local cheapo oil change franchise. I usually do much if not most of my own work, but sometimes the professionals really do know better!
