Can you replace the charcoal canister vacuum diaphragm?

I can suck & blow through skinny vac hose (coming off the throttle body) going to the valve atop the canister in my 87' 900t with no restriction at all. I suspect the diaphragm is blown - can I just install an inline check valve? There is also a much larger hose on the side of the valve going to the intake manifold closer to the far end - this hose is completely blocked & I can get no air past the valve.
Please don't tell me I've got to buy a new canister - I'm running out of time & money!
I've also got a leak somewhere in the dash & will attempt to trace it tomorrow...any known weak links I should start with? I read someones post recently about pulling the lines off the distribution switch & jumping vacuum to each vac motor individually...I guess I'll start with that, but the tabs on the radio cage are going to break off if I have to keep going into the dash!
BTW, the car failed emissions & hasn't yet been retested (next week). I'm still fiddling...but it runs great.
Thanks
