The problem is with my recently aquired '89 900S 5 speed n/a hatch. I bought it for cheap, with a
number of known mechanical issues, as a way to recycle some of the parts / money I'd invested in a previous '90 900s hatch that was hit and totaled... The '89 car had an issue with a consistently high idle ( steady at ~1500 rpm ) after warming up. I was told by the seller that he thought the AIC was the culprit. I replaced it with the one from the '90 (which I had occasionally cleaned with carb cleaner) and found no change...so I thought I'd look for vacuum leaks next. I replaced the gasket washers on the intake manifold and the valve cover and all the 5/32" vacuum hose in the engine compartment. I did find a flaw in the PVC plastic widget on the valve cover( the smaller plastic tube would slide out of the body of the part...) I replaced the piece with a new one from eEuro and the idle returned to around 1100 - 1200 rpm. still a little high, but much better. Over the weekend I replaced the clutch hydraulics, master and slave cylinders and clutch pedal to cure a low pedal situation. While I was in there I replace the rear main seal, trans shaft seal, pilot bearing, throw out bearing and also replaced the valve cover gasket to stop an oil leak which was driping down the front of the cylinder head and running behind the flywheel. Feeling good about things.... I decided to take the car to work that day instead of my Reliable
'93 Vert. Not a good choice.... The car was driving fine on a couple of short local errands and
then on the way to work it stalled suddenly as I was decelerating to a stop light after having driven for a short time at around 50 mph. It would not re-start, altough it seemed to be trying,
that is it would catch just for a second, and then die again, and after pushing the car to the
side of the road with the help of a passing driver I called AAA. While I was waiting for them I checked the cap and rotor looking for any damage. This was a long shot, but the only time the '90 had ever stalled was when a rotor had cracked.... I kept trying to start the car and after 5 minutes or so it started. The Saab gods have mercy.....
The idle was low and inconsistent and I had to play with the throttle to keep it running. I headed
back home to change cars and take the '93 Vert so I would not be too late to work. I cancelled
the AAA call enroute and when I got to the next stop light the idle was holding steady at around
1800 rpm.... I got home and parked the car and the next morning started it up to check for anything I could see. It started right up and idled around 1200rpm until it had warmed up and then it started idling at 1800rpm for a few seconds then suddenly dropping back to 1200 and ramping back up to 1800. It would repeat this cycle regurlar as clock-work and after a couple of minutes I shut it down. I'll try cleaning the AIC and the Throttle plate with carb cleaner and I've found Ari"s post on checking the AMM ( the wire is intact when viewed with a magnifying glass )which I'll definately follow. The previous owner had said the LH control computer was replaced recently...and the carpet on the passenger side footwell was not properly reinstalled which tended to reinforce this ... I've got a spare NTS sender from the '90 which I've cleaned up with scotchbrite pads and reads as being good with my Digital VOM as well as a TPS unit from the donor car. What else should I be looking for? Are the
trouble codes likely to be helpfull with diagnosing this sort of problem? Where would you begin?
Thanks for any help.
