cleaning gas tank

I want to clean my gas tank, does anyone have some pointers for me? I've run carb/injector cleaner through the system, and there obviously are some big chunks of something in there, because the car stalls when the fuel is low or I have been driving over a lot of dips and/or bumps, and the fix is to thump the top of the fuel pump, and knock whatever off. Needless to say, this has become quite tedious. I was thinking of pumping the gas out of the tank with a drill-pump. Know of a better way to get the gas out? Then I was going to just stick my hand in there and mop it out with a big sponge. Is there a better way to do this? The car is an 84 900, so I'm sure there is some gunk in there, and while unpleasant, I think it would be a good thing to do.
Thanks
