This mechanic really screwed up -- letting a car leave like that is pretty rediculous in my opinoin. I feel your disappointment here. I know that's not what you want to hear when you're psyched about a new turbocharger.
Anyway, those homemade studs might be a bad idea. I'd replace them. You just bought a brand new turbo -- so don't cheap out on the studs (24 bucks is too much, Eeuro or saabsite has them I'm sure for cheaper). It's somewhat common for them to break when removing an old turbo, etc (so maybe not the mech's fault).
As for the battery, it could just be dead or the cables could be loose.
If he says the cat is plugged, pull it off. Look through it. If you can see through it, it's not plugged FYI, right? Site sponsors have them for 200 or so I think or "for test purposes" you can put in a straight pipe to get you by.
Seems like also you need to set base boost. Tons of posts here and in Bentley manual how to do that. (but basically it's likely to be way off with a new turbo/wastegate and you calibrate it accordingly).
