Not sure if you phrased what you mean as well as you might have burlybrian; 3/4 yellow is pretty crappy response and far less than what you ought to see iwth a properly tuned engine. I basically saved my 1990 900T from the junkyard with 136,000 miles on it. After replacing several vacuum lines, plugs, new bougicords, and a new distributor cap and rotor, I got well into the red conisstently after adjusting the wastegate (I was only at 3 psi base boost). You're dead on right about adjusting the wastegate, but the other basic tune-up issues are critical (particularly new bougicord spark plug wires -- don't buy Bosch!). I think that is what you were getting at.

The 10-12 psi boost (into the red then backing off to 3/4 - 7/8 yellow before climbing again) is what is normal. From there, do the "Tweak My APC" mod, move the distributor stop and advance timing to 18-20 degrees BTDC(better yet get an AID or do a DIY modded vacuum advance capsule) and you'll really feel the power of hitting about 1/2 red. Then buy JAK's talon intercooler and a fan and you'll hit that, and hold the red, Then you'll wonder what kind of beast you really are sitting on! All for about $350 (most of that being the cost of JAK's intercooler (note, I built basically the same thing - after all the work I put in to do it, plus the cost of the welder, JAK's cost of $300 is a bargain.
