1979-1993 & 94 Conv [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
OK... seriously stumped here.
Background: Like a # of folks on this board, I removed the problematic EGR system on my 90 SPG. Runs way better. Boosts faster. All set. But as expected, the 90 LH ECU throws a chk engine light b/c it doesn't see the EGR equip, so I bought the 92-93 900 Turbo ECU (Bosch # ending in -948, the "latest" style for LH 2.4 cars). The idea here is that this ECU doesn't have the EGR circuit and thus won't throw the EGR fault code & chk engine light.
Here's where the mystery begins. Installed my new -948 ECU (I did it properly w/ battery disconnected). Car wouldn't start. At all. Cranked fine but no start. Hmmm.. Waited a bit, jiggled here and there, etc. Nothing. Reinstalled my old 90 ECU (ending in -582), car starts right up, idles perfectly, runs perfectly (but throws a chk engine light as soon as it warms up and I decelerate). Figured I got a bad -948 ECU.
So. Week later I get another brand spanking new -948 ECU. This one was tested and worked fine on a 92 Turbo before putting it on my car, so it's not a bad ECU. But on my 90 SPG, no start. Actually if I crank for 6-8 seconds, car will sort of catch on 1 cylinder after cranking for awhile, and I smelled gas. One thing to note: As soon as the key is turned on with this -948 ECU I get a check engine light. Which is odd to me since when the batt is disconnected I thought all codes were cleared. Also I verified that the connection is well seated on the ECU.
So. Again... I wait the 40 seconds, replug in my old -582 ECU, car starts right up, perfect running. Of course each time I put the sill plate and carpet back, when will I learn?
Does anyone have any clue WHAT on earth is going on here? Why would two known good 948 ECUs not work on a 90 SPG?
Do I need to jumper something on the EGR connections? Anyone? Bueller?
