well, the outer oil pump gear proabably WOULD work upside down...but the inner gear only fits one way...it has a locating lip to the pump body. I am not saying you damaged the gearbox casing here...the timing cover is you issue...you can replace it on the bench with the cylinder head on and the engine mounted to the gearbox, BUT it's really difficult to seal up...on the bench...and you have to pull out that lower right stud to fit the cover flush to the engine...no way this is going to work out OK with the engine in the car. If the car is really that good for $500.00, you should make your money back breaking it for parts, or selling it on ebay with the problems it has...especially if it's nice and rot free?
