Lower arms do not deform, then crack. Any "deformation" you see on an arm is from the manufacturing process when the arm pieces are formed. The failure mode, as you mention, is cracking, but that's not due to any bending that might occur, it's due to metallurgical failure.
The vast majority of the time, the arms fail while going slowly, wheel turned hard, in reverse. The prudent Saaber can clean the arms of dirt/grease and inspect them periodically for cracks (every oil change, if you so desire).
I've had an a-arm fail on one of my cars. On the other car, I just make sure the arms aren't starting to crack.
Also note that you when you remove the lower arm mounting brackets, you're going to change your alignment a bit. If the car pulls afterward, get the car re-aligned.
