Re: Sidebar: diy woes Posted by vvack0matic [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Sidebar: diy woes, ChrisMiami ![]() |
the 1990 to 1994 cars came out with driver-side airbag and anti-lock brakes,
there is a 1990 sis out on the market and there is a 1988 sis.
if the sis in question was a 1990 it would be fully loaded, equipped with the airbags and anti lock brakes.
now what i meant by (gem) was the dash.
most of the dash`s in the 900`s are cracked, and they are cracked good.
if the car was a 1989 and older it would not carry the air bag in the steering wheel and would make it very easy to unscrew the one nut that holds the steering wheel to the shaft and proceed to pull the cracked dash to replace it with and uncracked dash (the gem)
uncracked dash`s are very hard to come by and when someone finds one more than likely they have to pay top dollar for it. that's why it makes it a gem, costs just as much as buying one.
in the 1990-1994 cars the air bag makes it very hard to pull the steering wheel, so hard when messed with the bag either goes off in the face of the D.I.Y`ers or it will trip the cluster lights (check engine, and then will need to be reset by a saab dealer.
i`m sure there are a few diy`ers out there that know how to reset a tripped light but not to many.
same as the (anti)- lock brake system.
say for instance someone with the 1990-1994 900 wanted to do this (picture) to there car, it serves no purpose but it gives the car a little personality
the hole caliper will need to come apart to paint each individual piece
with the anti-lock brake there is a sensor running to the hub along with the anti lock central unit that creates pulsing to the caliper when the driver jamms on the brakes.
before the wheels would lock and start to skid the central anti-lock unit releases pressure for the wheel and then reapplies untill the car is fully stopped.
this pulsating effect happens throughout all four wheels on a car that is equipped with anti-lock brakes. (the cars 1990-94)
now for someone to rip a caliper apart and paint, replace pads on a 89 and older is very easy.
because very minimal parts hold the unit (caliper) together.
and if a small amount of air was not bled out of the line the only thing that would happen is the brake pedal would be a little spongy, indicating to the driver the air has not been fully bled out of the line.
on the anti-lock system every-thing has got to go perfect. as in taking the caliper apart and then in the reassemble. it dose not give the diy`er the option of leaving a tad amount of air in the line.
if air was left in the line it would trip the anti-lock light in center counsel and could quite possibly leave the car with out brakes, or destroy the pulsating unit, costing the diy`er time and money.
the 1989 and older cars do not have all these gizmo's indicating the 1988 sis is the perfect year (for me anyway) for a diy`er.
lets touch again on the dash.
i heard most diy`ers try to work around the steering wheel, just because its a ticking time bomb if messed with.
to pull the dash out of the car with the steering wheel still on is next to impossible,
reason i said almost is with a tin snips the diy`er can cut the bottom part of the dash so it can just slip out and around the steering wheel.
the new dash would have to be cut at the same ares (steering shaft area)
all this extra time needs to be done because of an air bag.
I'm a big fan of the 1989 cars and older how-ever
when i cross-over to almost dead, that would be the time i would no longer like to work on my car myself and would have the work done else where, at this time i would definitely buy the 90-94 car.
as i would be in my elder years my mind to foot might be a little off and i might just Jam the brakes because i see a stop light two blocks up.
this case i would need anti-lock brakes because me being in my elder years, i probably would not be able to control the car if it went into a slid, or a skid,
and i would most need the air bag because just think if the last place i was at to get brake work done left a little air in the line.
.... well in my elder years if the car didn't stop when i Jammed on the brakes i might panic and floor the gas creaming the car into on coming traffic, and i would be grateful the air bag was there.
just to top it off the 90-94 car i get when im in my elder years would definitely have an auto trans.
I'm sure to have all-timers and would forget i just shifted to 4th and i would be trying to put it in 3rd, cramming the gears and all.
heck i might forget to shift all-together and just leave the car in 1st, trying to do 55 mph.
but im getting off track here with the anti-system and the dash so im just going to stop writing
