R and R clutch problems

I've read every post about clutch removal and replacement but I can't get this bleeping clutch in. 90 SPG- the entire front end of the car is now off- radiator, core support, condenser, hood and headlights. Anyway, I've tried using a 5 gal bucket pail handle, a large bike shift/brake cable, spark plug wires( that one didn't work at all) but no matter I can't get it all in. I put 1 pin at 4 o'clock, get the entire unit on that pin and rotate, pry,tap with mallet, swear etc. and can almost get onto the last 2 pins, but it just won't quite go far enough to line up. THe issue seems to be the PP fingers hit the end on the slave. The throw out and spring compress enough but the end of the slave just doesn't have enough clearance or I need to depress the pp springs with a better tool- Now the slave end bares the evidence of those fingers - a few good gouges. I hope I don't need to buy another new one of those too...
Any advice for a definite shade tree almost mechanic?
