I just bought '91 non-turbo 900 from a long-time, knowledegable SAAB owner who was trading up --at ten time the selling price of my car-- to a nearly-new sporty Bimmer (which he, like myself, had purchased over the Internet, sight-unseen). He's a medical professional and we've been in correspondence for some weeks before I took possession of the car today.

After we had agreed on the sale, but before money /title changed hands, he told me that for the first time, in his experience, under hard braking the ABS and brake fluid warning lights flashed on very briefly, and he offered to terminate the deal if I wanted. (All the brake pads were replaced about 7K miles ago). I asked him instead to get his regular well-known indie SAAB mechanic to run a computer check and send me the results.

Which he did:

The indy shop's service printout said "check ABS/brake system: no severe fault codes found, brake system checks out OK. Light is most likely due to sensor".

While the braking seems fine, with no grabbing, pulling, or noise, clearly the pedal pressure required is considerably greater than was usual for my old '86 900. I noticed also that the brake fluid reservoir was down quite a bit, but probably not down enough to set off the warning light.

The car is completely rust free and appears cherry in every respect. All the service records are in good order and total mileage is only 97K. The seller has given me a verbal guarantee that if the ABS light comes on permanently in the next six months, as opposed to momentarily (as now, and only under hard braking), he will return my money and take back the car, assuming all else remains unchanged. He seems like a straight-shooter.

I've never had an ABS vehicle before. Should I be worried about the pedal pressure or anything else here? With my '86, there was no computer between me and the brake hydraulics.

(Incidentally, anybody looking for a driveable --for not much money-- and more-or-less presentable beater, check out the advert for my '86 900, up since 8 August in the SAABnet classifieds. It's the one with the canoe on the roof.)
