I wanted to thank everybody who joined this thread. I'm just amazed at the the depth of knowledge out there and the willingness of people to invest quite a lot of energy into these lengthy and thoughtful responses. No way we could practicably keep these wonderful cars on the road without such professional assistance.

BTW, I'm noticing also that while the temp gauge indicates a fairly cool-running engine (one-third up into the green range), the electric cooling fan (one only of the two) comes on on my 16V '91 and stays running after engine shutdown way longer than with my old 8V '86. Even this morning when I drove just 5mi at 30 mph in 62 degree weather?? Normal for the 16V engines?
