Probably time to start a new thread Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: brake pedal pressure: ABS and pre-ABS (long), Frank Myers, Sun, 26 Aug 2007 10:08:26 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
OK, start from the beginning.
When the car has been sitting for a while (say, overnight), NOTE where the brake fluid level is in the reservoir. Start the car. Do you see BOTH the ABS and Brake Fluid lights? The Brake Fluid light may stay on only for a few seconds. You should hear the ABS pump run (a hum from the brake area), and the brake fluid level will DROP in the reservoir.
If the brake fluid level isn't dropping in the reservoir, and you don't hear the ABS pump running (can be hard to hear), the pump probably isn't running. I'd expect you'd have both the ABS and Brake Fluid lights on. If the Brake FLuid light NEVER came on, it may be burned out.
There are a few things that can keep the ABS pump from running. One would be if it got very hot. Say lots of stop and go driving in very hot conditions. It shuts itself off until it cools down. If your accumulator is bad, the ABS pump will run a lot more, and is more likely to shut itself off. But it usually recovers after cooling off for a few hours.
Check ALL the fuses. The ABS pump is a 30 amp fuse. I *think* those fuses are in the engine compartment fuse box - not sure, it's been quite a while since I've been under the hood of a 900. But the ABS system has a bunch of fuses.
So it could be the 30 amp ABS pump fuse, other ABS fuses, a bad ABS relay, a bad ABS pressure switch, or possibly, a bad ABS pump. It's pretty much built into the master cylinder assembly, so it's not easy to find. Not that there is much you can do if you do find it.
So - after the car has been sitting a few hours, how does the brake fluid level change when starting the car, and do you ever see a Brake Fluid light?
