You pretty much have to do that, especially with the Saab pressure plate spacer. Remove the three allen screws holding the slave to the transmission, and pull it away from the transmission. You need to remove the pressure plate, clutch disk, and slave cylinder altogether. Going that route, it really doesn't matter if the slave cylinder won't retract... :) It can be a real bear trying to get the PP off the three dowels when pulling it all out, but it's doable. It REALLY helps if you remove the hood to get yourself some additional working room, too.
