my wife's 87 900t (auto) stalled out as she pulled in the driveway last night. the radio had cut out about a half mile earlier, and trying to start it gave the symptoms of a dead battery. so I jumped it and got it into the garage. it ran for a bit, then sputtered and conked out. the battery is new (1-2 months old) so I figured perhaps the alternator was shot. I didn't write down the readings, so I'm going from memory of last night, but putting a meter to the battery when off gave a reading of about 10. After jumping it to a start, it was at around 11+, then you could watch the numbers begin to drop. so it seemed it wasn't getting a charge.

the next time I got it going however, the battery read up in the high 13's, and remained steady. it continued to run. I shut it off, it started right up. repeated this three times and it was as if nothing was wrong.

now before this happened, I had noticed on Saturday that the temp gauge was high. I pulled over and shut it off, and the fans did kick in and the temp went down a bit. I put the heat on and drove home. testing it from then, the fans didn't seem to come on again. I put a screwdriver across the contacts on the thermoswitch for the fan and both kicked in. So I ordered a new theromswitch from eeuroparts and it arrived yesterday. I was going to put it in last night, and then this occurred. I assume it's not related at all, and just checking the fuses, and bridging the thermoswitch wouldn't have fouled up the alternator or voltage regulator, but just throwing it out there.

I'll be checking the car again when i get home from work. Is there anything else I should be checking? Can an alternator not charge, and then suddenly 'come back?' Seems more indicative of something that was just about to give up the ghost and on its last legs.

thanks for any help,

brian
