Brian,
When you have intermittent problems the first thing to think is "bad wiring" (loose connections, broken wires, shorts, etc.). Without a good, sturdy ground wire your alternator won't put out reliably. These alternators are mounted in rubber so they must have a heavy ground wire, some guys put two on there. I'd suggest taking a close look at your fan wiring too. Around 1986'-87 Saab used a supply of defective wiring in the 900. The insulation disintegrates over time. For the most part it's found in the injection harness and the wiring to the doors but if you have an '87 900 you should watch for it anywhere. You'll know it when you see it, the insulation is like powder. Otherwise it could just be a coincidence and you needed a new fan temp. switch. On old cars coincidences happen so often that having just one problem at a time is when you should get worried. Cheers
