was ultimately traced to worn slip rings in alternator. Look for previous posts for more details, but let it suffice to say that your symptoms-- radio failure shortly prior to die-out, amazing resurrection after fiddling-- sound familiar. In my case, removing and reinstalling VR for inspection provided short relief, as did wholesale replacement of VR, but the problem recurred and led to some serious cases of trippus interuptus.
VR brushes and ground connections are easily checked, and don't forget to see that alt light bulb on dash comes on when ign key is in run position. If all that is good, don't be afraid to pull the alt and have it bench tested at a rebuild shop. My bill was $67 for slip ring R&R and I've had no charging problems since.
Keep us posted and GL.
