For a few bucks you could probably take the muffler and the pipe to a muffler shop and have them remove the scrap bits from the ends of each. It's a lot easier and requires fewer applications of creative language.
Hit the bolts on the cat flange with penetrating oil and let soak before trying to undo them. Then use a large breaker bar to undo them. If they do shear off, you can probably just punch out the stubs and insert new bolts (IIRC). For some reason, on my cars, those bolts always seem to come off fairly easily.
