got the pipes apart, cleaned up and mounted. separating the pipes was not too hard - one, the intermediate pipe, was already off the car. the other, the front of the muffler, I got to stick out of the side of the car (unhooked the muffler hangers) so I didn't have to be laying on my back. as Ray suggested, took a sawzall to the scrap pipe to get the cut going, then used a hacksaw blade to go the rest of the way. once apart, the "outer" pipe was very easy to bend and slide off. the inner one requided two cuts to remove a 1 inch section, then a pipe wrench pulled it out.
the hardest part was removing the old bolts on the cat flange. it required a lot of cutting with the dremel (couldn't get a good angle with the sawzall). I just did that same task 2 months ago on my wife's 87 900, and swore I wouldn't do it again. and here we are.
thanks again for the suggestions,
Brian
