My 1990 SPG failed smog test in Davidson County TN last Thursday. Spent the weekend working on it. Passed with FLYING colors today.
I failed b/c of high HC's (mine was 233, 220 is allowable. i think that's in ppm). I had all new ignition components, car runs briliantly, and even a new exhaust including cat (1 month old). CO levels were fine.
I couldn't for the life of me figure it out.
After tons of research here and elsewhere, I changed the OIL and put a new FPR (fuel pressure regulator) on. Today, I passed with 46 ppm of HC, out of 220 allowable.
I suspect my FPR was going bad allowing car to run rich (I'd noticed at last oil change that my oil literally smelled a bit of gasoline)... and that the oil was about 3500miles old.
So -- Point is, try an oil change first and see where you are. You probably have some bad component in there also that's causing rich running.
Other things for failing with high HC's seemed to be:
1) vacuum leaks
2) misfiring (ie needs new plugs, rotor, cap, plug wires)
3) Air Mass Meter
4) FPR is bad or going bad -- ps if you pull off the vac hose off the top of it and smells like alot of gas, its probably going bad)
5) maybe the ELCD valve on top of the charcoal canister, there's some way to test it in the bentley by the way
6) and last and worst, engine is burniing a ton of oil
HOpe it helps!
