The 14-inch long piece connects the heater dial to the heater valve. You have no heat because it was disconnected with the valve shut. Hopefully the plastic U-joints on both ends are not broken. To reattach, reach through the gaping hole where your radio once was and feel the backside of the switch - you will be able to feel a flat spot on the shaft and note that it mates with one end of your 14 inch rod.

The other end is at the firewall. You access that by removing the driver's side speaker grill. The shaft on the valve is the same at on the backside of the switch, located just to the center of where the speaker grille is. If you get out of the car and in from the side you should be able to see the shaft on the heater valve (I think).

Get back in the car, slide the rod in towards the heater valve, and grasp it with your left hand through the speaker grille hole. Then using your right hand, slide the U-joint on the nearest end onto the switch/control knob (set the switch to the coolest position), line up the other end on the valve shaft and slide it on. I believe that there is enough flex in the rod/joints to mate them up without removing the dash facia. You might have to turn the heater control knob a bit to line them up. Put the speaker grille back on (don't forget to connect the speaker, and you can get on to your next task - replacing the radio.

Hope that worked out for you (BTW, I've got a spare rod if yours is broken).
