the key,
might i suggest getting the 3.0
boosting into mid red with the 2.5 is a little less fuel the motor has.
when pushing the motor deep into red your pushing a hole bunch of air into the cambers with the less fuel given from the 2.5, the chambers heat spike will be very high do the the lean air mix we are talking melting spark-plugs high, the 3.0 isnt adding a hole heck of allot more fuel but what it dose add is lower temps at full out boost giving the fuel/air ratio just a little more on the rich side cooling the heat spike a bit.

all it dose is drop the chances of the gasket blowing, & its much more worth while in time to change out at the same time it delivering great boost. (the link) what i found out about the 3.0 is there are two made carrying different part numbers. one will not improve to much while the other is the one your looking for.

about your tac`ing over to red untill the motor blew i had the same thing happen but i didnt blow the hose off the wast gate.
i blew the rubber grommet on the side of the intake manifold that holds the three way vac. plug inlet.

when the light turned green i dropped the hammer (the one and only time i did in first gear)
the car was a block down the road before the other cars at the lights wheels did one revolution.
it was when i dropped third i noticed the turbo never laid off between 2ed & 3rd as the wheels screeched when the clutch was let go.
i tried letting up on the throttle and to my amazement the car was still boosting. with my foot totally off the throttle was
trying to determine whats going on the rpm gage was rounding 5500
i did what came natural as quick as i could, i dropped 5th gear

going from 3rd to 5th bogged the motor down enough for me to think
with it slowly climbing into 60mph i knew it was only a matter of time before the boost grabbed and i was launched into never land.

so i was forced to do the unthinkable.
with the next light approaching i turned the ignition off.
motor went from full out to off. lost power steering and man handled it into a parking lot.
thinking i blew the motor up i popped the hood.
looked around and saw the 3way vac. plug i thought no way this little thing could floor the motor, plugged it back in and sure enough she ran fine once again.

the turbo unit in the 92t may have had a tighter spool up leaving it with next to no lag time. if you liked the tight spool install the mistu. turbo that came equipped on the cars.

it dose sound like you do still have the over boost switch still installed. from what you said you saw, who knows whats been done to the car.
just because of the leather shifter boot that was previously installed only tells that someone knew something. perhaps they indulged in performance a bit.

when you look at the apc inspect it and compare it to the pic.
see in the pic where the blue circuit board is vacant of any diodes or traces, this is the oem spg apc.
a red box apc or (upgraded apc) with not have any place on the board that is vacant, it will be filled to the max of all kinds of colorful things.

this apc has not been touched (as in the pots)
and it carries the original settings for the spg. (when i swapped apc the box still had the saab anti. tamper tape)
if you have the same board in the box and would like to see the difference in the pots(if any) from the settings, i could look tomorrow.

about the motor cutting out if you find out its a timing issue or some other mess i would love to hear about it. just because boosting deep into red and having the motor cut out for the mill`of a sec and then reengaging the sudden hit to the trans cant be good.
