inhvolves a simple apparatus that has pressure (from air line) on one side and 2 guages, and then spark plug type adaptor on the other. so , you give pressure, lock it off, then wait. the input pressure remains registered on one guage, the second shows actual pressure in cylinder. as it leaks, the pressure drops, relative to the original input pressure-hence the leak-down. compare all cylinders and you have a real life idea of what is going on-much more accurate than a regular compression test (especially as we assume the rings are even?). you can also tell wether it is the inlet or exhaust valves by listening if there is a big leak.
