DanF,
Oh yeah, seen this before. I saw this in a C900t some years ago when someone turned the engine using a wrench on the camshaft flats. It seems that the amount of force needed to roll the entire engine that way exceeds what is required to shear that single tooth from a cam sprocket. The cam must have only been slightly displaced at first because it ran, and then it stopped and wouldn't start no more. As the cam slipped around the displaced timing resulted in 2 bent valves (intake as I recall). In your case you can check for this with a compression test. A cylinder with no compression will have bent valves that can't close. The good news is that the damage is likely confined to just the bent valves. This doesn't seem to really damage the piston at all. Evidently those valves bend pretty easily and absorb nearly all the impact. So you can obtain some good used valves, replace the bent ones and you'll probably find that they work perfectly. (I know, flies in the face of everything our machinists tell us but I've seen it work several times now.) Do a leakdown test before reinstalling the head. OR you can do as generally prescribed and replace the piston and rod, and have a complete valve job done, with new valves, seats and guides, and only be out about $1500 (if you DIY)!! Cheers
