Can thermostat freeze closed?

'86 900T - this morning, a couple of miles after leaving the house, I noticed that the temp gauge was about to peg the overheat mark. So I pulled over, turned the car off and waited. I figured that the thermostat had failed closed. Since I was only a couple of miles from home, I took a chance and drove home, stopping 3 times on the way for a few minutes to let the car cool down. However, as I was turning onto my street, I heard a noise, maybe an ice breaking up kindof sound, and the temp. gauge then plunged down to about 1/3 above the bottom. I pulled into the driveway and topped off with extra fluid that I had lost, but then drove to work just fine. So could the stat just freeze and then get unstuck. I'm going to flush the system tonight (it's been a little neglected) and then replace the stat, but I was wondering if this had ever happened to anyone else b/c I've never had anything magically fix itself like this. Luckily I was only an hour late for work.
Also, I noticed that when my temp. gauge was about to peg the top that my rad. fan was not coming on. I've also had these fail before, but I was wondering if the temp. gauge was reading from a engine temp. sensor and the rad. fan was reading from a different temp. sensor then maybe my rad. fan is ok, b/c it just never got a signal for a high temp.
Thanks,
Wes L.
