Worst case was when I had to slice the shock with a cutoff wheel.
Breaking it off is easier but if the bushings are shot doesn't always work.
Tightening the new one up is problematic if the new nut is a jam/locking/nylock nut...you have to hold the shock shaft carefully (no scratches...use a thick plastic shim if you use a clamp or pliers). But the air wrench usually works well both to remove and replace.
Last time I did the koni shocks on my 87 900T it took 45 minutes from start to finish. Clock time. Even I was shocked.
