I used an old GM Shock socket

with a ring spanner on a regular combination wrench.
These sockets are getting hard to find, I just had one from the old days. It's a tight fit on Saab shocks, and may need a little persuasion with a ball peen hammer to seat the socket far enough down on the shock.
Another method is to cut the shock rod from below with a small cut-off wheel. You must also cut through the large washer under the rubber shock mount.
