A very small vise grip (but not needle noze) can be slipped in to grab the shaft from underneath, between the rubber and the sleave at the top of the shock in the wheel well. If you can't slip it in, cut the rubber. You'll have new rubber on the new shock, so you won't need it again. A few simple extensions and a deep socket will do the trick on the nut on the top.
I've tried the snap off method only once and it bent the mounting area a little bit, not enough that I couldn't mount the new shock, but enough that I won't do it again on a car that I'd like to keep for another 20 years.
