BIG issue: you cannot get the assembly out without the engine out, at least easily.
When I rear-ended someone once, The hood pushed up towards the glass, and broke off one of the wiper studs. I had to replace the assembly: boy did that suck, because it is too big...I think that the car was assembled with the wiper first, then engine dropped in.
I remember standing on my engine bay, straddling both sides, head against the window, screaming bloody murder in the hot Cali sun, bending the below-glass body to get it in...years later, I now think that if you take the valve cover off, you may have room...
You CAN replace the cable, and can do so without fancy tools: I also had this problem on my 85 900T. Finding the cable is hard, I agree with the other post, but I remember that it didn't cost much, but I think that it was a dealer item.
YOur cable may not be broken,,,so you can re-fit it into place.
The cable wraps around the pendulum-of the wiper that is driven by the motor. YOU Have to take the motor out so that this arm can swing freely. re-fitting is not hard, but may take a few hours of meddling to get it right...
no way to explain, just look at it and play for hours. I reccomend a pillow to rest against whil tinkering.
I remember getting good at this job because my 85 had this happen repeatedly.
