It can be done with a new cable assembly.
One other thing I did on my 87 900T after refitting the cable (it jumped off several times) was to drill the spindle and pulley and fit a spring pin. The drill slipped sideways a little and didn't clearly drill a hole in the spindle..it just drilled a notch about halfway into the spindle but the notch in the spindle and the hole in the pulley sufficiently pinned the pulley to the spindle.
The wiper assembly CAN be removed with the engine in the car and the cam cover on the engine. I've done it roughly 5 times so perhaps there's a steep learning curve...funny, it never occurred to me to pull the cam cover, but if you're hitting it, go ahead and pull it!
PS: Make sure you get the cable on the pulley correctly to get the wipers to wipe in sync rather than outside to inside which, although it might look cool, won't work very well :>)
