When I switched from Syntec to Mobil 1 I cut open my oil filter & found lots of hard (carbon?) bits, so I know M1 does a great job of cleaning things up.
My suspicion on the causes of leaking don't have so much to do with cleaning as with the nature of syn oil. It "clings" to surfaces much better than conventional oil, which means it also "wicks" across surfaces much better. I believe it's this tendancy to wick that allows it to seep past seals more than conventional oils.
If you're having a seal leaking problem, run Auto-Rx before switching to syn. Then use a Group III oil like Syntec, Rotella T Syn, or Amsoil XL7500. The Group IIIs are highly refined mineral oils, so they don't behave exactly the same as Group IV "true" syns. This is also the reason why Amsoil recommends shorter OCIs for the XL7500 than the others.
