Of course that's what he says. Synthetic oil has cleaning properties. What hapens on older engines is that varnish deposits can build up near seal lip surfaces. The seal may not be in "new" condition, these varnish deposits actually act as a labyrinth seal. When Sythetic is installed, it cleans away the varnish deposits, letting the oil hit the worn-out seal area and start to leak. It does not happen instantly, and it is notthe oil's fault, butthe fault of a worn-out seal. If you were to talk to an Amsoil tech (I'm just a dealer), they would recommend using their XL7500 series oil. It does not have as much of a cleaning additive package, so it will not affect the seals so adversely, however, you do not get the same extended drain capabilities as some oftheir more premium varieties. The XL series oils are recommended for 7500 miles, but their standard oils are rated for 25000 miles, and their premium oils are recommended for 35000 miles.
