On my long trip to my g-friend the last Oct I accidentally filled the tank with low octane gas (brand-name gas station but the quality quite differs from one county/state to another). It was knocking even with the basic boost on Val's LPT 16v!
Man, I tired to the bones to have this tank driven out! If with normal gas it takes Val to drink about 9.5-10 liters for each 100 kms (sorry man, hard to swap it to mpgs) when hitting a highway then with this low octane the mpg significantly increased! I.e. on the way there I was to refill the tank every 500-550 kms (330-360 miles) when the warning lamp came on then I had to drive more then 600 kms (400 miles) with that b/s to have the light on.
I don't know 'how stuff works' in this case but probably it's cause of gently driving you're to do in order to prevent knocking. Although I did my best to make Valkyrie drink as must as he can (pretty fast and low flying but with poor acceleration).
