I agree on both counts. If any of the Saab cars should be tinkered with, it would be the turbos.

I live in Tampa, and we have one of the highest fatality rates for pedestrians and cyclist. That said, it is only a couple a year for a tri-city area countaining 1.2 million people.

To make you feel more comfortable, here are the facts:

1) About 800 cyclists are killed annually by cars/trucks
2) Half of them are under 16
3) Of the remaining 400, the vast majority of the deaths happen after 11PM.

If I remember it works out to be about 100 deaths of responsible cyclist per year. Kids tend not to look, the post 11PM crowd are usually drivers who have had so many DUIs that they now ride bikes and are usually drunk themselves when hit.

That said, I avoid certain roads like the plague and stick to back roads and suburb roads. People are polite, generally go all the way into the next lane and often wave. Lance Armstrong's victories helped a lot.

The roads you want to avoid are the ones where people are commuting on, or have a need to speed on. It's the expectation of going 60mph that irritates them. Think of the times you've gotten behind a slow poke in the passing lane. You really don't need to do 70, but you feel that you should and it causes irritation.

My advise, get a folder, always wear a helmet, follow the traffic laws as if you are a car (legally you are bound to do so, and it creates good will) and make sure you have the flashing red lights (rear) and a front light (white) and have a good time!
