Siegfried,
Yeah, -25 C here right now and 8 feet of snow in the North yard. There are five places where mechanical indecisiveness can occur when you shift from first to second; 1)the shift ball and the ring that it moves at the bottom of the shift lever, 2) the infamous rubber coupling, 3) the finger that inserts into the shift forks and moves them, 4)the shifter housing isn't secured to the chassis and 5)the engine/transmission unit is not secure on it's mounts. So I think that you are experiencing a combination of (near) frozen oil combined with some slack in shift control which isn't a problem when the oil is warm. This could also be exacerbated by a worn synchromesh balk ring and/or worn 1-2 shift fork, both of which are very common in these units.
I'd start by checking the shift ball and shifter housing. The 3 little screws that secure the lever and ball should be tightened properly and the 3 fancy nuts that hold the housing to the floor must be tight. See whether the grease in there is thick as glue also. Maybe some lighter grease would let the ring slip around the plastic ball more easily in cold weather. If the rubber coupling is weak why would it prefer moving the 3-4 fork to moving the 1-2 fork? (Theorizing here) Maybe twisting the rubber coupling (by swinging the shift lever to the right, 3-4 gate) sort of "wrings" the slop out of it so it can then effectively push the shift rod forward and move the 3-4 fork. (Maybe my brain is too cold.) Cheers
