Yeah Austin,
It's way more likely to be the valve and it will make all the same big mess. On some of the replacement valves the leak occurs at the tiny seal on top where the small shaft, about 1/8" diameter, which lifts and drops the valve plate passes through the valve body. The seal, a tiny o'ring, is held in by a small round plastic disk that is glued in place over the seal. The glue joint fails and the o'ring and disk then slide up and down with the shaft allowing coolant to spew out big time. I have fixed these (amazingly with complete success) by drilling and bending a small piece of 26 gauge steel and then screwing it to the valve body so that it holds the disk and o'ring in place.
