Heater valve: The "right" way and the easy way Posted by CMyles [Email] (#1126) [Profile/Gallery] (more from CMyles) on Thu, 14 Feb 2008 10:49:41 In Reply to: oh i wasnt sure if it was the core or valve, Austin Underwood, Wed, 13 Feb 2008 19:45:17 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Austin,
While rebuilding Saab transaxles I used to watch Saab mechanics do this all the time by only; 1)disconnecting the two hoses at the firewall from the heater valve, 2) sliding the driver's seat back all the way and then, while laying on their back, unscrew the four little bolts that hold the valve to the core and 3) reach through the left speaker hole to maneuver the valve out as they slipped the control rod off of the valve shaft. Bingo! it's out! They didn't remove the bolster the core or anything else. The little bolts are usually 4 mm allen bolts so you need a long 4 mm allen driver that wobbles (and infinite patience) to unscrew them and wiggling the valve out is kind of like a magic trick. HAVING SAID ALL THAT I would recommend that you; remove the bolster and unscrew the plastic pan that holds the core in place and pull the core and valve out together. It (theoretically) takes longer and you undo things that don't absolutely need undoing but it's much less frustrating and there is one huge concern: The four little allen bolts can be rusted and almost impossible to unscrew even with the thing on a bench! Furthermore, keeping the two o'rings in place while you maneuver the valve into place and run in the bolts is pretty tricky when done upside down with the accelerator in your face and success is much easier to achieve if you assemble the core and new valve on your bench and then install the assembly. I had to do one last winter in a car that's now in my driveway under 3 feet of snow so I feel your pain. I installed a new plastic (Scantech) valve and about six months later the shaft seal escaped as I mentioned in an earlier post in this thread. That was the first time I fixed one of those valves with a steel clip to hold the seal. I now do that to any new valve before I install it. (It's dumpin snow here right now.) Cheers
