I agree, just starting and letting the car run for a short time is counter productive. However, if you can run it up to operating temp and drive a a mile or two, I think thats beneficial. It keeps everything lubed, including brakes, trans and dif. Something not mentioned is gas stabilizer. I found with my Miata,which sits all winter, that even with a fuel injection system, it keeps the fuel system from gunking up. The one year I didn't use in the Miata, it was difficult to start and ran poorly for several tanks of gas.
